Relex & Claude vs Clio
Own your clients, your data and your firm.
Clio is a practice management platform: matters, contacts, calendars, documents and billing, with an AI assistant, now called Manage AI, built directly into Clio Manage. Relex makes a different bet about where the AI belongs. The case itself is a formal ontology an agent can work on, the Claude you already pay for does the reasoning over de-identified labels, and intake, drafting, signing and invoicing run in one workspace. Manage the practice around the work, or automate the work itself.
At a glance
| Dimension | Relex | Clio |
|---|---|---|
| Where client data goes | Encrypted in your browser before anything leaves your device. The model only ever sees [Party 1]. | States that data is never used to train AI models, and reports SOC 2 Type II and SOC 1 Type II examinations, GDPR alignment and HIPAA support. |
| Whose AI runs it | Bring your own Claude or Claude for Legal over MCP and OAuth. You own the reasoning. | Manage AI, which replaced Clio Duo, is built directly into Clio Manage. Clio does not publicly name a model provider, and does not publicly describe bringing your own model or agent. |
| Try it today | Sign up and run a real case in minutes. Free to try, no card. | A 7-day free trial with no credit card. EasyStart is published at $49 per user; other tiers are quoted on request. |
| Who owns the client | Partner Network: own the client and keep 100%, at 0% commission. | A referral network for Clio users and a channel partner program. No marketplace take rate is published. |
| Case structure | A formal ontology of parties, issues, claims, statutes, and facts. | Matters, contacts, calendars, documents and billing. |
| Your know-how | A private per-tenant index the model searches. Never a copy it keeps or trains on. | Templates and firm data inside the suite. |
| Getting started | In the browser in minutes, standalone or with your own Claude. | Self-serve signup on a per-user subscription. |

The opposite bet
Clio prices the people. Every seat pays every month, whether the work moved or not, and the AI is an assistant sitting inside the suite you already bought. Relex prices the work and then automates it. Cases are tiered by complexity, the Partner Network is a flat $99 per month at 0% commission with you as the merchant of record through Stripe, and the AI layer is the Claude you already pay for, which never receives a single client identity. Clio manages the practice around the work. Relex does the work.
Why the pairing wins
An assistant built into a practice suite can only reason about what the suite stores and only with the model the vendor chose. Relex inverts both. You bring the Claude you already subscribe to, over MCP and OAuth with no key to paste, and Relex gives it a formal case ontology, your private know-how, and a boundary it cannot cross: names, national IDs and contacts are encrypted in your browser, documents are de-identified there, and the model works on [Party 1]. You keep the reasoning you chose, and your clients stay strangers to it.
Own the intake, own the client
Clients reach your practice by email, by WhatsApp or SMS message, or through a guest link you send them, and what they tell you becomes a structured case the agent picks up without asking them to repeat it. Intake, drafting, native cryptographic e-signature and invoicing run in one workspace. Through the Partner Network you are the merchant of record through Stripe, at a flat $99 per month and 0% commission, so the full amount your client pays reaches you and Relex never holds their money.
Relex is a software platform. It is not a law firm, it does not replace lawyers, and it does not provide legal advice.
Questions people ask
Is Relex a Clio replacement?
Not feature for feature, and not for a firm whose day lives in Clio’s calendars, trust accounting and billing. They are different bets. Clio manages a practice. Relex automates the legal work inside it: a formal case structure, drafting and redline, e-signature, invoicing, and your own Claude doing the reasoning without ever seeing a client’s identity.
Does Relex have practice management features?
It has the ones a matter needs: cases with tiers, encrypted parties, attachments, drafts, playbooks, native cryptographic e-signature, invoicing through Stripe, and intake by email, WhatsApp or SMS message, and guest links. It is not a trust-accounting or court-calendaring suite, and does not claim to be.
Which one works with Claude?
Relex. Install the plugin in Claude Code, or add the connector in Claude desktop and claude.ai, and sign in over OAuth. Clio’s Manage AI is built into Clio Manage; Clio does not publicly name a model provider, and does not publicly describe bringing your own model or agent.
Who holds my client’s money?
You do. In the Relex Partner Network you become the merchant of record through Stripe, so payments go directly to you at 0% commission on a flat $99 per month. Relex never sits between you and your client’s payment.
